Moving into a new-to-you home can be exciting, but it can also come with design challenges. One of my clients recently found themselves in a home where the primary bathroom felt stuck in the 1990s—think blue-green square tiles and a honey-oak vanity. They dream of a full renovation down the road, but right now, their goal is to refresh the space without breaking the bank. If you’re in a similar situation, here’s how we’re transforming their bathroom into a vintage-modern farmhouse retreat on a budget.

STEP 1 | Embrace a Fresh Vanity Color
Instead of re-staining the honey-oak vanity, (which can be costly and labor-intensive), we’re painting it a rich, moody color - Benjamin Moore’s Ashwood Moss. This dark gray with brown and blue-green undertones complements the existing tile without highlighting it. It also lends that modern farmhouse vibe—think vintage charm meets contemporary sensibility.

STEP 2 | Update the Countertop on a Budget
A full stone countertop isn’t in the cards right now, but that doesn’t mean we have to settle for less. We’re opting for a laminate countertop with a Taj Mahal look. It has warm, creamy tones that help neutralize the blue-green tile and add warmth.

STEP 3 | Choose a Soothing Wall Color
To further balance the space, we’re painting the walls Benjamin Moore’s Ballet White. It’s a creamy neutral that doesn’t skew too yellow or brown, making the room feel fresh and light. Ballet White complements the tile instead of calling attention to it, helping it blend more seamlessly into the design.

STEP 4 | Tie It All Together with Textiles and Art
To make the blue-green tile feel intentional, we’re incorporating textiles and art that include a mix of beige, ivory, green, and hints of blue-green. We’ll add a runner on the floor, a shower curtain with complementary tones, and two pieces of art above the toilet that echo those colors. This layered approach makes the tile feel like a deliberate design choice

STEP 5 | Add Warmth with Wood and Gold Accents
Since we’re not re-staining the vanity, we’ll introduce warmth in other ways. A wooden mirror in the same tone as their master bedroom floors will anchor the vanity area. We’ll also add a towel ladder with ivory towels to fill empty wall space and bring in a cozy, farmhouse feel. Finally, gold hardware, a gold faucet, and gold lighting will add a vintage-inspired touch and tie everything together. Shop these items and more here.

The Final Look
The result is a bathroom that feels intentional, cohesive, and inviting. We’ve embraced the existing elements, softened their impact with thoughtful color choices, and added layers of warmth through textures and finishes. This approach allows my client to enjoy a beautiful, vintage-modern farmhouse bathroom now while they save for a full renovation later.
